TOUR DE CORSE - DAY 1

The second pass through the “Aullene-Arbellara” (27.78 kms) stage meant the loss of any chances of a podium position for Sergio López-Fombona and Guifré Pujol. A piece of the gearbox broke at the beginning of the stage dropping them to 11th position in the category and destroying all their hopes of a good result in the sixth event counting towards the PWRC. Before this problem, Fombona was comfortably sitting in fourth position, close to the podium places.

Despite this Sergio López-Fombona's performances should be thought of as excellent on a surface he knows well. Since the beginning of the day the Asturian driver was showing his commitment towards getting a good result by establishing a very quick pace. Fombona was fifth on the first stage, the same position that he got on the second stage, even though he lost something like 20 seconds when the car stalled after some violent braking. Nevertheless he was still in fifth place overall, well ahead of his closest competitors.

During the second running of the stages, the Gijon born driver moved up to fourth position following “Ampaza-Col St Eustache” (32,89 kms), improving his previous time by a massive 44 seconds, no doubt the RACC driver was feeling more and more at ease. However he went from the top to the bottom when at around the 8th kilometre of the last stage, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII suddenly selected neutral and the car duly stopped in the middle of the sector.

   IN SERGIO'S VIEW

"After the first three stages we were within our target even though we could be even better placed. The first stage was very difficult as we had a too stiff setup although, at the same time, the tyre choice was very good. On the second stage, the engine stalled after braking when we were on the way to setting a time likely to be the fastest. The target was to continue that way, without making mistakes but the problem we suffered on the last stage doesn't give us any chance of shining now.

A piece of the gearbox got loose and we lost all the gears. That cost us something like 8 minutes. Tomorrow the only target is to try to make up as many positions as possible and trying to get within a points scoring position."
